Hi, my name is Erin, and in July 2015, I was diagnosed with a mild, rare form of cystic fibrosis (CF) and cystic fibrosis-related diabetes (CFRD).
Although my CF causes more digestive issues rather than lung complications, this new diagnosis combined with CFRD has been incredibly overwhelming at times as I have struggled to learn a new rhythm of life.
Over the past several years, my knowledge and understanding of CF, digestive issues, CFRD and overall wellness has grown tremendously. I began struggling with gastrointestinal problems in my teenage years, but at the time had no idea that the culprit was most likely cystic fibrosis (it’s all making sense now!).
Even before the diagnosis, my aspiration for a more holistic approach to life, combined with a desire to help others led me to earn my Health Coaching Certification through New York’s, Institute for Integrative Nutrition, in July 2013. This education, combined with the immense support and care I have received (and am still receiving!) from many doctors throughout the years has played an enormous role in helping me persevere and even thrive at times in the midst of my illness.
As you already know, cystic fibrosis can be demanding, exhausting and constant. Juggling medications and medical supplies, frequent doctor visits, carefully planning meals and snacks, and exercising to keep our immune systems strong and our lungs healthy all play a vital role in maintaining our day-to-day health. And because CF affects many parts of the body, it may also cause additional health complications such as (in my experience) food sensitivities, SIBO, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and CF-related diabetes. These factors combined often leave us feeling like managing our health is a full-time job!
My hope is to pass on the information I have learned from my experiences to help make your CF a little less overwhelming and to provide support and encouragement as we travel this difficult road together.
